World Book Day Brings Generations Together
Residents at The Orchards in Crewkerne recently enjoyed a heartwarming World Book Day celebration, thanks to a special visit from children at Jigsaw Preschool.
The preschoolers brought plenty of energy, laughter and curiosity with them as they spent time with residents at the 45-bed care home, located in the heart of Crewkerne. The visit was filled with storytelling, conversation and joyful moments as young and old came together to celebrate the magic of books.
For many residents, spending time with young children brings back fond memories while creating new ones too. Resident June shared how much the experience meant to them, saying:
“It’s been lovely spending time with the little ones.”
The Orchards team place great importance on creating meaningful activities that connect residents with the local community, and the visit from Jigsaw Preschool was a wonderful example of this in action.
Activities Coordinator Michelle said the day was full of special moments.
“It was a joy to see the children and residents having so much fun, so many hearty belly laughs, this is what outstanding care looks like.”
Intergenerational experiences such as these are incredibly valuable for both residents and children. For residents, time spent with younger generations can help lift mood, stimulate conversation and reduce feelings of loneliness. For children, it encourages confidence, empathy and a deeper understanding of older generations.
At The Orchards, maintaining strong community connections is a key part of daily life. The home regularly welcomes local groups, schools and organisations, ensuring residents remain part of the vibrant community around them.
World Book Day proved to be a perfect opportunity to bring people together, reminding everyone that stories have the power to connect generations.
And judging by the smiles in the room, it’s safe to say this won’t be the last visit from their new young friends.
